If you are a beach bum, there are many activities that you can try. Surely, beaches will never be dull or boring for you. You can try scuba diving, swimming or snorkelling. If you are seeking adrenaline rush, you can consider parasailing, paragliding, wakeboarding and many other water sports. If in this case you are interested in surfing, you should pursue it. Surfing is fun.
But before riding the waves, you need to learn the art of surfing. Learning surfing, like other water sports is not easy but as time goes by, you’ll get better. You always start as a beginner. Here are some things that you need to know about surfing:
You have to secure a beginner’s surfboard. The first thing that you need to learn is lying on the board. You need to find the balance of the board and then mark it. The mark will serve as your chin’s reference so your board will respond similarly to your weight every time.
The next thing that you need to learn is paddling so you can catch a wave. When you try to paddle, do it with both arms. Paddling will speed up or slow down the board. Paddle in a crawling stoke (the arms should take turns).
After learning to lie and paddle, you need to learn sitting. The first try will be shaky but as you go along, you will surely get it. The key is to keep calm and make sure that there are less movements so it will be easier.
It is time that you know how to stand up. Some people find this hard but as mentioned earlier, things will be better. When you feel that it is time to stand, put your hands next to your shoulder palms down. Just think of push up. Do your best to push your body upwards at the same time sweeping your feet. Your feet should be on the stringer.
Like any other sports, accidents happen and injuries may be sustained but you can decrease its chances by observing surfing tips. The first thing that you need to do is distance yourself from other surfers to avoid collision. Do not forget about your leash tied to your surfboard. Always surf with a companion so someone can check on you. More importantly, protection like vest and rash guard should be worn at all times.
