De-cluttering may be the first thing you need or want to do at the start of your year, but the truth is that there is really no one right way to start doing it.
There are, however, many ways you can do it wrong and make it stressful for you or everyone at home, or even worse, you might end up adding more clutter to your home than when you started out.
Make sure you never make these four huge mistakes when de-cluttering:
1. Don’t set aside your whole day for your whole house
This is the biggest mistake you can easily make, especially if you recently watched an inspirational video about starting anew.
If you try to do everything on a Saturday, for instance, there’s a good chance that you won’t actually finish your entire home and end up cleaning on Sunday as well, effectively taking up your entire weekend.
Instead, try breaking down your whole general cleaning task into several smaller tasks. When cleaning or taking out clutter in different nooks and crannies at home, be sure to work on one section at a time.
2. Don’t make everything absolutely perfect
Very few people actually have closets or homes that look like those in catalogues, so don’t bother trying to make your HDB flat in Singapore look like them since you will only be really disappointed.
Instead, try settling on a more reasonable goal – and that goal should be setting up a space that works for you. If you can reach your goal, that is your success.
3. Don’t start buying all kinds of storage containers first
Your first priority should be organizing, not buying storage containers. No matter how many bins and boxes you buy, they’re useless if they don’t have enough room in your HDB flat or condo unit.
Whether you’re looking to re-organize or get rid of things you don’t use anymore, it’s important to know what you need and what you can let go of. Doing this first lets you know exactly what kinds of storage containers you need, and how many you need for them.
At best, you only need to clear out old things without having to buy new containers, which gives you more space for newer things.
4. Don’t forget to maintain your clutter-free home when you’re done
The biggest secret to having a clean home isn’t about clearing out your everything you don’t need and having only the bare minimum of things when you’re done – it’s all about taking small steps to keep everything neat and orderly.
Once you’ve pared down your home, don’t wait until your stuff piles up again. Be sure to take the steps to actively manage the small things in your home, and be consistent in keeping everything in order.
